So Carlos is totally freaking me out. He is talking about all this blog stuff and archives and formats and I'm just thinking... are all these years and hours that I've invested going to be rolled into some lameo everyday wordblogspotpress plain jane blogroll yada yada that looks like every other blog in the world? No WAY! SUPERCW.COM is SPECIAL damn it. It's very personal and very heartfelt and even though when I look through all these archives I notice quite a bit of cheese, there is a sincere appreciation for everything I've been able to witness and lurk and distribute in this medium. It CAN'T be less than perfect.
*Sigh*
You know what? I trust him. His other sites are very simple and elegant and he himself pretty much rules. I guess being so fiercely independent and in control of what I do for so long is what's creating all this hesitance. In actuality? I'm hyped! I think?
No, I am. It's gonna rule.

So supercw.com will be down for the next 24-72 hours while the domain name is redirected. Be patient. Look at my old school blogs if you need a fix. For now...... it's all under construction.

You know something else... I mean, Amy for example. She is right there with me as far as seeing the new gen take over blog-and-age-wise. But, I'm freaking out because she has actually actually suggested that she may even stop blogging all together. This can't happen. Just because there are younger, more vibrant, more sleazy, more colorful, more talented, more intelligent, more whatever types creating their own domains doesn't mean that YOURS still isn't being tirelessly stalked for whatever personal reasons your readers have. Please just never stop. I vote yes to all the thirtysomething photo bloggers on the Interweb forever. Love, Christa.

Saturday Showdown...

...it IS, after all, the second Saturday. I got the text for this competition's theme but totally forgot what it was. I know that brilliantairre Maui artist Joe Pa'a'hana is participating, and since the LOST people are back on island working they might have whipped something up too. Shane Cross? You in? Who else... Gerard? Rob? Well, in any case I always enjoy these. Get there early to get a good spot-- this thing fills up.

Also tonight-- Terren Zorne and Chris Cano are debuting their new party at Longhi's. Very posh stuff. Body painting, bottle service (recommended-- the booths at Longhi's are rad), checkered floor. Should be right.... and you always want to be at the first anything, right? Always always always the best one.

Some special events are happening though. Mainly the "official" launch of Alex and Corey's site that you've heard me mention here and there. It's called "DoSomethingTonight" and it's pretty good. Most times the faces behind anything web or technology driven are NOT like this:

I don't know how they get anything done with it since they're always out partying but whatever man. It's the best resource that I've seen and totally unbiased. If you do any events and you haven't sent them the info go ahead and do that. Come by their launch party tonight too. They're really nice guys. They probably won't be sober tho. Just saying.

Later tonight at E&O there is a monthly happening from the Downtowne ladies Ruby and Kayko. If you don't know about these parties, I'm not sure I really want to tell you. They are for women who love women and they go OFF on the themes. Tonight is fashion week and I'm not missing this for the world.

SO ya ya ya summer is over. Come on you guys. Is it REALLY that bad? Maybe I'm just clueless since I live alone and have no associations with anything seasonal (including the weather-- it's always nice here) or educational (unfortunately), but I REALLY could care less that it's Labor Day. You shouldn't either. The year is winding down, that's sort of odd. It went by fast. I'm not sure what makes time go by fast anyway. I mean-- it's always going at the same pace, it's just when we actually stick our head up and notice it.
Well whatever. It's just Labor Day. Not like the craziest milestone. Let's talk more about time and legacies at the end of December, K?

Meanwhile-- DON'T get overwhelmed for this weekends activities!!! Let's just take it one day at a time. It's always better to have 7 things on your plate that way when you only make it to 4 or 5 it's still a very successful weekend. I'll take it one day at a time for your weekend suggestions on here anyway. With the exception of Skin, because you need to plan for that one. The rest? Eh. Just do what I do and have one drink at each event. I swear one day I'll make a party hopping pop-up book. For now, here:

Lunch at the Contemporary Museum today would be a good idea. Get up there! They are debuting the new exhibit and it's supposed to be HELLA dope. All smoke and mirrors. I already mentioned something about this. I'm hella excited to see the Phantasmagoria.... and eat an avacado wrap. [photo by c. russell -sb]

Whirl away from the office and right into the lovely property of the Honolulu Academy of Arts for "Endless Summer" and see Keoki make surfboards. These are always fun and overflowing with interesting people. Lurk the photo galleries from past events to see what I mean on their website.

Go to Art After Dark early. Like, right at 6pm. Do a whizz-through-whirlwind tour of everything and then get your ass over to UH for Jake's Onthe1. He does these regularly and knows what he's doing. ALLLLL college students are free so get there before its over at 10:30

Nadine Kam is blogging! I'm hyped. It's called Fashion Tribe but trust me, I'm sure there will be tid bits from all sorts of arts and nightlife stuff in addition to the fashion scene. I see her everywhere and she is definitely one of my faves. Bookmark that ish!

Also this week, it's going to be a pretty jam packed weekend you guys. Get ready. The big ones? Downtowne, GroundUP, Skyline, and Russell Tanoue's finale for that model search thingie. I'll give you more details soon. As for TONIGHT! Hedwig, Commando, & Lyle Matsuura are all playing live at Next Door and it's 18nup so all you college kids (welcome back!) make sure you check it out.

Next door to Next Door at Bar 35 is their usual B rated classic sci-fi, monster/horror, Kung Fu night. Have a drink!

So I totally saw an amazing total solar eclipse in Newquay (that's in England) in like 1999 or something. Two full minutes of total darkness in the middle of the day. It was crazy. Like the end of the world and I'm not even kidding. All the birds started freaking out and squawking and it got really cold. It was a moment where the power of Earth and the sun and the universe could be felt, that's for sure. No wonder people freaked out about that kind of stuff in the beginning parts of humanity.

Well tonight Hawaii is fortunate enough to be in the pathway of a total LUNAR eclipse. These are pretty dope too. I mean, I can only imagine what our ancestors thought when that huge white ball in the sky turned blood red. I'm sure something was sacrificed.

Either way, they say it should start getting awesome tonight around 11pm. Make sure you stay up. If you can't bear to go outside alone there WILL be a webcast from NASA. Gotta love those guys.

Two times Thirty Five...

Remember when Gelareh opened her spot? She just called it the address...only a cooler way. Thirtyninehotel. 39 Hotel Street. Well Dave Stewart knows a good idea when he sees one, and along comes even more options for the scensters that dwell in Chinatown with the addition of Bar35. TWO years we're celebrating that venture. Tonight. I'll be there at 7pm to gulp down those yummy raspberry beers before the opening night of the Honolulu Symphony. Sarah Chang is gonna KILL it on that Sibelius, but I have to admit I'm really looking forward to the Wagner. He knows what's up as far as brass and percussion. I totally remember actually getting numb from so much chicken skin playing his that damn Tannhauser Overture. Ya, his full operas were pretty cool too. If you're in to that. I mean. The Flying Dutchman. Come on.

...or something like that. I'm actually looking forward to the new show up at the contemporary. It's a traveling show and they've been working hard to put it together. Lots of smoke and mirrors, but like, art.

The shadow—literally, the absence of light—represents something that is beyond the object yet inseparable from it. In many of the works included in Phantasmagoria, shadows are used to allude to death, the obscure, and the unnamable, and to construct allegories of loss and disappearance. In several of these pieces, the artists evoke the history of the shadow theater, as in wall drawings by Danish artist Julie Nord, in a video animation by South African artist William Kentridge, and in French artist Christian Boltanski’s shadows from a rotating figure, recalling imagery from the carnival as well as figurines used to celebrate the Mexican day of the dead.

Mist, breath, and fog are often associated with mystery; in their double status as perceptible
yet almost nonexistent phenomena, they suggest evanescence or absence. In the work by French artist Michel Delacroix, pans of water are elevated on tripod bases, casting shadows of their silhouettes on the walls while eerie patterns of light reflected from the water’s surface dance above the shadows, activated by viewers walking past. Throughout the installations presented here, artists’ use of shadows and/or actual fog and mist evokes the alluring enigma and magic of Phantasmagoria.

...next door like the place next to your place. Like, Next Door the spot at 43 N Hotel Street in the heart of Chinatown. It's made a huge impact in this little town since it first opened and a major impact in my little world. Just a quick nosing around and i found that a lot lot LOT of memories have already been created and archived since its opening in 2005. Some of the best underground hip hop acts I've ever seen and even some major ones like Blackaliscous and Kool Herc. Matt Costa TWICE. Local people that I can't get enough of like Paula Fuga and the delicious Makana. Stuff like Cinema Paradise. Skate video premieres. Make outs. Private parties. Public parties. Urban Pacific. Smart bar. Discussions. Acid Wash.... I mean DAMN. Hard to even believe it's just TWO years old. Well, we're obviously going to join in the celebration all through this weekend.

So ya, come join the celebration. Tonight is a special fashion show by Dan and there's stuff happening all weekend.

...was try something new day. Did a double smackdown on that starting with lunch at the new I Love Sushi in Kaimuki with Kalima. Uhhhh. That sparseness on the belt was because we were the only ones in there. I think that gap is what we wolfed down 2 seconds after we sat down. There is something about instant gratification, especially when it's mixed with food. Oh man.

This film was dope. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone suffering from inability to pay attention to stillness for too long. Into Great Silence.

Like what, you're expected to know about each and every cool and x-rated thing in the whole WORLD? Pshhhh. Ya right. Just believe me ok? I only know about him because I subscribe to Vice but whatever man. I'll be the first to tell you that I haven't bought the book but it's only because if I want a compilation of his columns I can get to clippin. It will be super rad to meet him tho and have a conversation. Peep his site and you'll fall in love too. OH! and here's a review ripped directly off from Amazon about the book... just so you know it's not "technially" porn people:

Mondays are tough, I'll be the first to admit it. Thank GOD for BAMP! They've been managing to bring Hawaii some very good talent since forming a few years ago and man, I gotta tell you. Success! Seriously. I'm trying to remember their first big show-- and I think it was Nick Cannon and 112 in 2005. Anyone? Or was it Mix Master Mike? Shoot, I wish I could remember, but ya, now they've got the venues overflowing and are identifying bands that other concert promoters are like "who?" and the concert goers are like "YES!!" and... well, it's working people. Case in point? Ummm... TONIGHT! Jeez, RATATAT?!?!? What the! I'm so excited. Thankyouthankyouthankyou. Monday is definitely going to be a fun day Brad, Aubrey, Matty and Philip!

Also, before RATATAT, Uncle Tom is presenting The Shins for the kids. They're very nice to listen to. Come early if that's your thing.

Twighlight Summer Concert....

...has such a nice ring to it, no? How about a nice harp ensemble? A blanket, a loaf of bread and some cheese and some of the world's most amazing tropical botanicals. The cannonball tree is there. WHAT THE! Seriously one of the most stunning things I've ever seen in real life... but I'll let you in on a little secret: I'm really in to trees. So majestic they are! And lovely...

So anyway! A free concert in a lovely setting. Why not? Tonight's show is pipes and drums. DRUMS! Woo. I remember trying out for a pipe and drum thing. It was so cool, man. You get to totally twirl your sticks all crazy before you hit the drum each time. It was definitely a cool technique but I'm glad the sticks were attached to my wrists with a leather strap, haha.

So anyway, Thursday activity..... Foster's Botanical Garden! Right in the heart of near-downtown. A fabulous setting... with the concert at 5:30pm. Nice pau hana. Dare to be different!
...and you can go see this plant. Part of the Pea Family. *snicker*

ALSO LATER: Another budget-friendly option is Swampa ZZ at Indigo. It's free cover and some amazingly refreshing funk music.

Celebrity Status....

...well not really. I really just wanted to mention that the SPICE GIRLS are getting back together!!!! Can you believe it! Zig a zig ah! More on that, um, someday.

What else.... we drove by the place that had my van parked outside today. I guess I'll go ahead and tell the entire heartbreaking story. See... it involved something super. A super beetle. A 1971 super beetle. A 1971 SEA FOAM GREEN super beetle. I loved that car.

So ya... it was the best car in the whole world and I loved it to pieces for ever and ever until the day it didn't go. That's always the worst isn't it? Damn. GO car. ugh... So the guy that was nice enough to tow it for me and attempt a repair told me while avoiding my tear soaked eyes that it was going to need a new engine... but that's when I looked up and saw the larger, newer, more practical vehicle there pretty much smiling down at me. It's not the first VW Camper I had driven, and I really missed the upright stance you have when you're driving a bus with the wheel horizontal in your lap. It's so fun! I begged him to let me buy it. Which he did... at a reduced rate since I gave him my beloved super beetle to restore for his daughter. AW!

I immediately went to work letting my girl scout troop loose on it having "Craft Day" on the interior and turning it into a driving wonderland of fun and amazement. If you know anything about these vehicles, you know they are fully equipped to house 4 people comfortably in one of two convertible beds. There is also the card table fold-out option that works well at Sandy Beach for playing cards inside when it gets too hot [big John knows!], and the back couch was the perfect size for Hankie to watch the water or nap on. See below.

You can imagine why/how it was slightly upsetting seeing my car that I traded away for a computer, a PC even, because I had evil hybrid in the picture giving me all this false hope for my car future. Now, two days after evil hybrid has finally kicked the bucket for good I see the van that I loved so much just sitting there on Queen street with a fresh coat of paint.

Hold on to what you can people, and definitely let some things go.... but DAMN it make sure you know which is which!

ALSO: Happy Birthday Ara! Everyone is going to be in Chinatown tonight. GO! Acid Wash people!!

Dreary Weekend....

....on Oahu. Noticed a lot of people didn't do much. Myself included. DID manage a quick current-blockbuster-preview-sesh on Saturday. Here's the rundown:

Film: 1408
Time Spent Watching: about an hour
Verdict: VERY good. Filmed super nice, excellent script [I believe it's based on a Stephen King story?] and very good in terms of visuals and cast. We only left because it got too scary for me. I'm a wimp.

Film: Die Harder
Time Spent Watching: :15
Verdict: OK. I only left because we were watching from the front row and my neck started to hurt. It was at the part where the kid was like "I'm coming with you" so yes, very cliche, but funny, and Bruce Willis still looks damn good.

Film: Harry Potter
Time Spent Watching: :40
Verdict: Caught this AND the trailers. WHAT is with the blockbusters these days? They all looked not just lame but super lame. I feel for the masses. The previews were also not aligned with the audience, as they showed that Lindsay Lohan where she's insane and a stripper preview to 6 year olds. Nice job. Anyway, watched this one from the beginning to about :40 in... it was ok. I'm assuming it's very similar to the previous films. It was ok I guess. It's not my thing unfortunately. So we broke out. If you liked the other ones you'll probably like this one. That Hogwart school looks so fun tho. Serious. I wish they really had those.

Film: Transformers
Time Spent Watching: :05
Verdict: It's not a cartoon.... and it was awful. Caught it towards the end where the car monster was fighting/racing in what looked like the east LA river. Good for younger men I would imagine but it was NOT what I thought it would be. Bad bad bad.

Anyway, I have a weekly update for you as well. I just have to.... um... do it. Give me a minute. After work most likely. We'll see. Now that I 'officially' have a car that won't go it cuts down my fiddle-farting around town time.

Public Enemy....

...was totally here a few years ago. Remember that? You might have missed it. Even though there was a ridiculously loyal fan base that turned out for this, I think the show was an overall miss but ONLY as far as profit goes. Ask Dave Hisaka, some people can stand to lose 50K here or there...but for the people that WERE at this show and WERE fans of Public Enemy it was an outstanding afternoon. Amazing even. I'll even stretch that and say it was the best show in terms of hip hop I've seen out here. Davie says it's the best show he's ever seen and he doesn't even LIKE hip hop.

The venue was perfect-- outdoors, plenty of room, bathrooms, choke parking. No bottleneck situations as far as entering or leaving. The vibe and energy of the crowd was top notch. Just a great well thought out plan. The only thing missing? PEOPLE. I seriously respect everyone in concert industry on Oahu. You never know what people will show up for. It's a gamble probably pretty much every time.

What got me on that? Oh, Jason's column mentioning Wu Tang's full lineup heading out here with Supernatural and Bone Thugs September 1st at the Blaisdell. Do they have enough Hawaii fans to fill that place? Will they actually buy tickets and show up? And WTF Living Legends?!?! WHY aren't you coming as well, you are part of the Rock the Bells but you can't make another trip to your 'second home' again? What's up. We love you... we THOUGHT you loved us. So anyway, ya there's no question that this will sell out. Right? RIGHT?

We'll see... I know I'm buying my ticket as soon as they go on sale just in case. You never know!

What the! Last night? What happened! Lol. It went from a classy pau hana at the Listening Party with Lia Sophia jewelry to crazy crazy crazy. I left my gift bag in the Hanohano room, Flash was drunk by 5:30p, and my boss isn't even in yet. Haw haw.

Listen! The girls have all been talking about doing a private clothing swap for a while now. Just bring the stuff we don't wear and trade it for something we would. Speaking of, why is it that other people's stuff is always more interesting than your own? Haw haw... have you ever peeked through your girlfriend's makeup? How many sparkle creams does someone really need? And why do I always feel like I have to have all of them! Ahhh.

Ok ok ok back to my point. You already know this weekend is the Fashionista's Market. The back to school clearance that's gonna get you some crazy hot designer stuff for really cheap. They moved it to the Japanese Cultural Center where there's WAY more room [no line for the fitting room anymore! woo!] and they have some new samples from Frankie B. Woo! Well also while you're there you can pay $25 for a ticket to their FIRST clothing exchange event. This is gonna be rad. You bring a pile of the clothes you just don't wear anymore and then have lunch [included]. ...on others is unfortunately not recognized sometimes until they pass on. Sometimes it takes something tragic to snap us out of our every day blah blah yada yada to be more aware of this. I just found out that someone close to me from my school days died, shortly after I saw them for the last time. I'm not sure how to mourn since he's been gone for 7 years. It's hard. But Shawn-- I'll never forget you.
Speaking of people affecting others, Rell Sunn was also an amazing individual. She ruled the westside in terms of surfing but also continued to reach out and touch others with her tireless attempts to preserve the beauty and safety of Hawaii.

Happy Tuesday!
I got an update from my old friend Nate Sherwood. That kid gets so much friggin slack from people. He's one of those 'energetic' types that I tend to migrate towards. Whatever man. He's smarter than you give him credit for and he is by far the most adorably manic man in skateboarding. His words:

...your birthday, America. I don't think it was intentional. You know, we all got our own stuff going on in all this busy-ness and whatnot. You know. I can barely remember to mail my Netflix. I think this year having it land on a Wednesday might have had something to do with it. It's like "ya ya ya life life life WOAH! holiday tomorrow."

But whatever. We'll still celebrate and we'll celebrate because it's our independence day. Some of us might take that in a more literal sense and celebrate THAT. Some of us... won't. I, however, am happy to confess that I have finally found [I think] a smidgen of peace in a pretty crazy and messed up few weeks. We'll see. Thanks for sticking around through all my mood swings. iPhone what??

...there was certainly hype about these. So I must go ahead and share my phone story. It's not really a story so much as a lesson. A life lesson.

BUT! Before I do I must tell you that my good friend and fellow lurkogropher across the pond Shad Lambert totally got an iphone. his take on the whole ordeal is my favorite on the interweb. It's the only blog entry worth reading. Woo.

So ya, remember the spots for those RZR phones waaaaay back before you ever saw one in person? Like, the commercial when the entire room folds into the palm of this lady's hand with super cool edgy music? Ya. I saw that... and I HAD to have that damn phone. Of course it wasn't going to be launched in the US until the end of the year so I ordered one from Europe for only about $150 extra. Totaling the phone out to be slightly more than what an iphone is retailing for today. Nice. Well I got the phone and was pretty hyped on it for the two months it was in my possession before getting stolen in the VIP room at the Pro Bowl party when me and Lloyd were both acting a fool dancing on the couches. Nevermind the money. That phone wasn't even AVAILABLE in the US yet. I quickly replaced it with an ebay version and went immediately to work making it my own at that bead store in Kaimuki with Olena.

If I was going to spend so much money and effort to have a one of a kind super hot not released yet phone I might was well put in the time to have a custom phone dangle no? Too bad THAT only lasted about two weeks too. Stupid semi-pocket capri pant fashion statements. If anyone who works at the Living Room wants to roger up that they found it ... I know it was like 2005 or something.. but I'll take it! That thing was cool.

FIVE phones later... I'm using the cheapo default phone from [hate my carrier so much I don't even want to give them a mention here]. The lesson here? Material possesions can suck it.

As 'Different Week' closes...

...there are a few things that I've learned. Mainly? A lot of things never change. It's nice to know there's options though. This is the best city I've ever lived in... and taking two steps to the right of my comfort zone has opened up even more beauty and richness. I'm surprised more people don't do it... but I can understand why too. I mean, we still wound up in our favorite spots as the evenings would wind down.

Some highlights:

first of all. i wore a hat. i never wear hats really. ok, it's not my hat, and it was only for a second. but ya. different. [ps: happy birthday kalima]

wine club at indigo is a very lively bunch.

i'm going to take lessons. i need them.

island hopping is good but don't take your phone.

people on kauai are very friendly. and fun.

and finally... don't mess with france. unless there is some sort of beer-chugging component. cause then you will beat france.

Here's some advice from Dr T. Ruth:

Dear Tim,

You can't love two people equally so lets get that straight right now.
I don't think the problem is choosing between two women: I think the problem is that you haven't really learned to take care of yourself fully yet in a grown up and adult fashion.
Here's what I mean. You are 28 years old and living with your brother.
You want to go back to Anne's house because she takes care of you. You don't have to bother setting up your own place because you so easily fit into hers.
In a sense, she is like a mother to you. She is soft, sweet, understanding, and puts up with you.
You also don't respect her quite as you should and think she is way too "soft." I think she represents the part of you that is childlike and needs to be taken care of. You imagine that you are taking care of her when actually she is taking care of you.
Ellen, on the other hand, is independent, passionate and self-sufficient. She also doesn't live near you so you don't have to really put this relationship to the test as of yet.
She represents another piece of yourself, the independent and sensual man. She attracts you greatly but you haven't been in the same place with her long enough to make a decision about her.
My belief is that when we are in a situation such as this, when we cannot choose between two people and feel "in love" with both, that we are not actually in love with either.
Both of these women satisfy a different need of yours.
Anne takes care of you, provides you with nice home, and makes you feel safe and nurtured.
Ellen is passionate and sexual which is the opposite side of the same coin.
I suggest that you may be deeply attracted to each of these women, but that you haven't evolved fully into your own life to actually make a decision as a mature adult.
Further, I haven't heard you say what you provide for either of these women. You seem way more focused on what they do for you.
In a mature adult relationship, we give and take equally. You are taking from both of these women, but what are you actually providing for either or both of them.
Here's my advice. Get your own life in working order before you make any decisions!
Move out of your brother's house and get your own place. Make sure your self-esteem is based on your own achievements and that you feel more fully evolved and centered whether that means working things out personally and/or professionally.
You don't mention your family background but my sense is that their may be some mother issue at play here.
You may think you are being good to these women, but, in reality, you are lying to both and misrepresenting your availability.
The bottom line is that we can't really and truly fall in love until we love and value ourselves. Other people cannot complete us or be used to fill up the empty spaces within ourselves.
I would work on my own life and feel more loving and complete within myself before putting pressure on myself to choose either of these ladies.
After you have grown a bit, you might be able to make a better decision, or, you might actually find someone completely different!

After work you should make an attempt to eat something delicious... and I'm talking about stuff like potato chip nachos. Macadamia nut crusted warm brie with honey and basalmic vinegar. Etc. Kincaids! Pupus are half-price and YES it's a ZONE event... but good is good-- and those eats are damn good. I've been loving that spot for years. Proof.

TONIGHT as in late nite is another fantastic hip hop show that you won't regret seeing at Next Door. Pharcyde's Fatlip is there with OMNI who has been known to cahoot with the likes of Aceyalone [ahem, the best kept secret in hip hop but whatever]. Side note: hip hop show is the most underestimated source of pure unadulterated GOOD there is. Never not fun... especially the underground shows at Next Door. Good vibe. AMAZING vibe. Much love. Much energy. Much dancing.
I'll be all up in that mix.

Tell me your first impression of Charlie Parker.
Ah... well, I had, I had knowledge of his reputation. I’d been waiting for him
since Don Bias left the band at, and at the, not the Three Dueces, The Onyx.
And they said, “Oh, this little cat from Kansas is coming.” So, I’d been
waiting, but Bird didn’t show up. And when he finally showed up, somebody
brought him to my apartment at Seven West Fifty-second Street, and I was
on a high ladder painting my high ceiling and there was Bird at my feet, and
I was very young.
What drew you to him? What was attractive about him?
I, he was, he was irresistible. I mean, men, women, nobody would say ‘no’ to
Bird. He had a life force, an incredible life force and he dominated
everything, music... He knew, he knew how to meet somebody and if he
didn’t like them, with a smile, he could put them down, you know. He just,
he was, I couldn’t resist. (Laugh)
Tell me about the 52nd Street scene.
(Laughs) Fifty-second Street was one of the grand moments of my life and I
just lucked up an apartment there and there were all these clubs. Well, every
night, because they had two bands a night in each club. So, during
intermission the guys used to come to my apartment or we’d walk down the
street and smoke a little and, and then I'd go back and hear the next set.
Every night, I heard music there. It was gorgeous for me.
What was Charlie Parker‘s special gift?
In what way?
His musical gift, his human gift. What distinguished this man?
Bird was a giant. He was a giant. He was above all other facets of men that I
had ever known. He was, had a maturity beyond his years. In fact, he said to
me one day, “I’m not one of those boys you’re used to.” And I went “Oooo!”
(laughs) He had, he had a command.
Let’s talk about drugs. What drew him into drugs?
Bird was turned on when he was 15. And had a habit right after. And he was
on it many, many years. In fact, when I first met him, he still had a habit,
and he tried to kick many times while he was with me. Sometimes very
successfully. But he told me once, you know, you can get it out of your body
but you can’t get it out of your brain.
How did you deal with the addiction?
He never let it, Bird never let it touch me. He never shot up in front of me.
He kept it completely away from me, and I never had any desire to
experiment, thank God.
But it was a tempestuous relationship...?
It wasn’t a tempestuous life with Bird because he was my protector. And he
always had me on a pedestal away from... He used to say, “That’s dirty
outside. You don’t want to know about it.” And it never entered our house.
And when Bird was home he was loving and protective and sweet and a good
father and adored our animals and... It didn’t, it, believe me. It’s hard to
believe this but he never, he never brought any of that into our house, and I
had no... I would worry about him, of course.
How hard is it to be the white woman of a black man in NYC in the
40s and 50s?
It was tough to be a mixed couple. But you know, it never bothered me. I’ve
been an outlaw all my life. I was half Jewish in Westchester County, you
know? I stood up for civil rights when there weren’t any civil rights. I just, I
didn’t care. I really, it didn’t let, it didn’t touch me at all.
What would happen?
Well, look, people would look at us funny on the street or, and Bird carried
himself so proudly, and I knew he was there by my side, and I carried myself
that way. So, it never really, I never allowed it to touch me. In fact, I
hesitated to live with Bird because of my daughter who was five at the time.
And being brought up by a black man, in those days, and I worried about
that. And she tells me now, you know, children are colorblind, and she tells
me, “No. I used to vomit every morning before I went to school; I hated it,
and the first morning that Bird took me by the hand to school, I had no
problem.” And she adores Bird.
I have this sense of him being both strong and fragile.
You know, as, I know Bird was strong. I never saw him as fragile. I never
saw any fragility in Bird at all. I don't think he was fragile.
In your memoir, you describe some periods where he moves away
and he seems to be in trouble...?
Well, towards the end, you know, he was he was suffering. He had bleeding
ulcers; he had many medical problems. But that didn't make him fragile as a
person. I think Bird always had the strength to carry on, as I do. I think I'm
strong and I don't think I, I'm not fragile at all, so I don't think that...
That works. Why did he go back to drugs?
Back to drugs? When?
You said that he would go off, be successful and he'd be pulled
back...?
Well, you don't, as I said, as Bird said, you can get it out of your blood, but
you can't, they can't get it out of your mind. So, I think that he was
constantly hounded by drug dealers, you know. So, if there was a fix out
there, maybe he was tempted to do it. But I don't think that had anything to
do with fragility. I think...
I'm done with the fragility thing. People always bring together the
drugs and the music, as if they're one and the same.
Oh. Do you know the highest incident of drug use is among doctors? (laughs)
And how about the highest suicide rate among dentists? I don't think that
correlates. Of course, the temptation is there for jazz musicians, because
there's always somebody there to say, "Hey, man, try this," you know. But I
don't think there's a correlation between jazz and drugs. I've been involved
in jazz all my life and I've never had any desire to use drugs.
How bad was his health back then? I understand you had, did some
shock treatment?
No. When Bird tried his suicide attempt, which was, no. He, was trying to get
out of breaking a Birdland concert, you know.
What did he do?
Well, he took aspirin and iodine, you know, and so, I called Bellevue, and he
went away in the ambulance, and he had this cut-off pair of pants and there
was a very sympathetic doctor there. In the beginning, young guy, who knew
who Bird was, you know. And then, the head guy, the chef came in and
called me into his office and Bird could only stay in Bellevue a certain length
of time it was in the hospital. Either you get dismissed, or you go to a state
asylum. And so, the chef said, actually to me, "Madam," (and this is quoted
in the film because a lot of the film is taken from actual words that Bird said)
"I'd shock him." And I said, "This is a creative artist. You can't, you can't do
it." And so, Bird never had shock treatment. I wouldn't allow it. And he said,
"Alright, I'll have to let him go." I said, "Yes. You do that."
So he never had shock treatment.
No. Never, never, never. Bud Powell did, but not Bird.
Why does Bird live?
Because, Bird lives because he touched so many people. Musically and
personally. And he certainly lives in this house and he'll live with me and my
kids forever.
What is it that you would like the world to know most about Bird?
That he was a wonderful, warm, talented, dynamic man. Caring and loving.
Did he have a temper?
He had a temper... he showed his temper differently. For example, if he
didn’t like you, he’d call you “Jim,” with a big smile, which is, of course, Jim
Crow. And some dumb drummer was working with him. He said, “Whatever
happened to that chic, Chan, you used to run with?” And Bird said, “She’s the
mother of three lovely children.” You know? So, he knew how to turn
whatever hostility he felt into a put-down with a smile. (Laugh)

...I'll go ahead and mention the "Different" thing we're doing this weekend.
So you've heard me mention Chris Kalima, like, oh a million times already. He is kind of known around these parts as the dude that gets [cool] shit done. The list of projects is long but just trust me on this... the guy is friggin epic.

His latest activity is nothing to be afraid of... just 48 or so people having a rather large picnic with superduperfun games. Olympic games. For $25 you are taken care of completely by Kalima himself and get to meet all sorts of new and interesting people that may or may not already be in cahoots with this extraordinary dude.
The teams are randomly put together so this is really an opportunity to have a lot of fun, if meeting people is fun to you. There will be PLENTY of beer so just in case you're shy you might... not be.
GAMES people. Games in the park. With beer. and Kalima. He's actually opened this up to anyone that wants to play so I highly suggest grabbing one of the 12 spots that are left.

..duh, Summer Solstice!
Why NOT blame the axis of the earth and its witchy ways for some of the stuff that's been happening around here. What now since we all are wearing clothes and driving cars we can duke it out with 5.9736×1024 [to the 24th power] pounds of spinning mass? Ok. Cool.

I should elaborate but just tell me if you've noticed an energy as of late. Good or bad-- just a bit more energy that you've experienced since December. The Winter energy is probably masked by the whirlwind of goodbad during the holidays and such. I'll tell you it was a conversation last night that many people jumped in on and agreed with immediately. Speaking of last night I am already done with the shots and they will be up today. Kalima was there too so don't worry if you couldn't make it down. If you WERE there tho... how was that ROOM! There was a lot of excitement and positive energy in there for sure. Shit man. I'll go ahead and say it was one of the better nights I've ever seen in that space.... and that's why I'm gonna work overtime to show you. Um. Later.

Ok ok ok maybe you don't. All I'm saying is there were HELLA people out last night. Such that I got this instant rush of energy that carried me effortlessly from Hanohano's pau hana to Mercury bar to Bar 35 to Next Door before I finally gave in to the lack of downtime I've been experiencing lately.
Good job, Honolulu!
Not like the Hanohano room was at capacity a mere hour after kicking off had anything to do with me posting the photos of how rad it is, or mentioning that I'm going there. Same with the funfunfuncrazydanceawesomeness 80s gig at Next Door on Wednesdays. I didn't see hoards of familiar faces so I'm totally assuming it's just a coincidence. BUT! There have been a few of you introducing yourself and admitting you lurk, which means the world to me. Truly. YOU GUYS. I just want to say thanks. I'm not trying to step on any toes in this town. It's a lovely place with lovely people and it all deserves to be shared. The fact that anyone beyond my crew can be entertained by the things I talk about and show is one of the reasons I haven't stopped and probably never will.

Ha ha I still remember when Maleko introduced me to you at 1739 like four [hundred] years ago and your hair was in cornrows. Maleks was like "This is Jason. He's not black." HAAHAAHHAHA. But ya. I was there at midnight when his real birthday was going down. So was Lovely Lucy. We'll all be going for round two tonight tho. Because 80s music is ridiculously fun to dance to.

What else what else. OH! I ran into Ryan Kinemaura last night after his Tuesday gig at Thirtyninehotel. He told me he's gonna be filling in for Makana tonight at Indigo. The jazz. The jazz.

There are other options for your Hump Day hop as well. Lurk the barely legals at the O Lounge. It's never not good. Unless your definition of 'good' is 'boring'. You can go to the Hanohano room early and drink these amazing specialty martinis and watch the sunset from waaaaaay up there. OOOh! You can go online and register for the 2007 Olympic Games. As far as life in the night goes, I say be different sometimes. Sure it's a small town and you can probably tell that I'm particular about sticking to what's good... even if good means pretty much Chinatown. Anna Bananas was totally where I got started when I first moved here. [and NO you can't see those blogs!]. Tonight is always up in the air since it's open tables but sometimes it's actually ridiculously fun. Let me know how it goes:

Ryan and Justin are still keeping it going at Thirtyninehotel with the jazz thing. There is also jazzy stuff at Indigo with Maria Remos. If you're into mellow-cruise and you want the good options... go to Chinatown, man. Then you can complete the evening with the Kaleidescope. THAT is a damn good party... and check out the flier they did. It's a coloring contest! No shit! The winner gets a t-shirt or something so hit up the admin closet not for multi colored highlighters and I'll see you there.

ok ok ok. Just want you to know that best possible option for you tonight is Anton Glamb at the Frequency party. This is at Thirtyninehotel tonight and here, in no particular order, are the reasons why I think you will enjoy it:
1. It's an Enterprise party. That means dancedancedancedance. It's super fun to dance sometimes.

2. It's at Thirtyninehotel. The last place you can 'technically' smoke. On that beautiful lanai.
3. Even if you don't particularly know or like Anton's music, it's a damn entertaining show. Trust me on this.

There ARE other options if you're just not feeling the downtown scene. I mean, Russ has a very successful going-on at Brew Moon for the barely legals. EnO is good for people who want to dress up. Same with the W. Also-- Grammy winner Little Louie Vega is at mynewfavoriteafterhours spot Lotus tonight. THAT ish is going til 6am too... Woo!

I'll be at thirtynine tho... where there's never a dress code or douchebag.
