Portraits!

Ok. So you may or may not know that I have a bit of a thing for portraits. Portraits and trees. If I was any good at photography you can bet that I would be chasing all of you down to sit for a cw-style portrait. Look for my faves one day, but for now you can look forward to the new exhibit at Thirtyninehotel this Friday. I know, right. First Friday. A.k.a. When-Downtown-turns-into-ZOO day.

date: Friday, September 7
event: First Friday Opening Reception
time: 6pm-9pm & 9pm-2am
admission: FREE (21+ w/valid ID)
6pm-9pm, opening reception for Portraiture Revisited: thirtyninehotel's First Annual Juried Exhibition.
Artists: Mandell Andres, Dana Forsberg, Jaqueline Hegarty, Erika Johnson, Wendy Kawabata, April Lee, Mark Maresca, Lori Ohtani, Jessica Oshita, Ryan Kerns.
Juror: Gaye Chan, Artist and Chair, Department of Art and Art History at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.
After the reception, stick around for DJ Harvey and Chittom. Global cult hero DJ Harvey joins Double Joy’s Mark Chittom for an evening of left-field classics, nu-disco, and wall-to-wall revelry.

Sounds SUPER exciting to me. I won't miss this for the world. TONIGHT you can actually head over there for some chill music and yummy fruit drinks. It's also Kaleidoscope so tonight is Around the World w/Cherry Blossom Cabaret, Black Square, Malcognitas, & Scrabbel (from SF!). Wait. Cherry Blossom?! I'll go around the world with YOU! HAWT.

Best Find EVER.....

...and I *technically* didn't find it. It's the rentable photo booth! Ok, anyone on the mainland reading this, go ahead and K to the next blog because I'm sure you have something like this on speed dial.

But HAWAII!! OMG! WTF! LOL! You must check out Bluecheese Hawaii and rent that ish. Then INVITE me. I'm sitting here on a Tuesday morning trying to come up with unique photo booth concepts. Chris hit this already after that stint at ice palace and yes, I think I agree that the individuals are my fave.

Anything you can do SHE can do better...

Nadine Kam is blogging! I'm hyped. It's called Fashion Tribe but trust me, I'm sure there will be tid bits from all sorts of arts and nightlife stuff in addition to the fashion scene. I see her everywhere and she is definitely one of my faves. Bookmark that ish!

Also this week, it's going to be a pretty jam packed weekend you guys. Get ready. The big ones? Downtowne, GroundUP, Skyline, and Russell Tanoue's finale for that model search thingie. I'll give you more details soon. As for TONIGHT! Hedwig, Commando, & Lyle Matsuura are all playing live at Next Door and it's 18nup so all you college kids (welcome back!) make sure you check it out.

Next door to Next Door at Bar 35 is their usual B rated classic sci-fi, monster/horror, Kung Fu night. Have a drink!

So last night's moon! I didn't know you could see it all the way in Vegas. Rad.

I am sad to hear that Ctrl Alt Del isn't playing Kaleidoscope again until September 11th, but at least they are playing again. Make sure you don't miss that one. Tonight it's Hell Caminos, Linus, Jessy Atomic, and Megum Pie.
Just so you know-- this event is still 18 and up so make sure you enjoy that while you can.

Nateo Updateo

Happy Tuesday!
I got an update from my old friend Nate Sherwood. That kid gets so much friggin slack from people. He's one of those 'energetic' types that I tend to migrate towards. Whatever man. He's smarter than you give him credit for and he is by far the most adorably manic man in skateboarding. His words:

Christa I am up to my neck in shit School Psychology to be exact.
Skating/ finishing up American misfits this season. Celebrating my
411 part being out Wrenching hard on TWS stuff. Writing my novel as well when Time permits. Looking for a job in sales marketing design advertising and or anything Skate.
I as well been firing off emails and letting humans know how I feel about bullshit. A small sample is under me. I been trying to do my thing and By looking at Shad on your page he helped me back a shit load on my Apple stock that I bought 2 years ago at 50 bucks a share and is now up to 132 last I looked. Thanks Shad. I as well been running the hustle and living as I do here. I A am a member of a billiards league with the great one Matt Hensley and We travel around to pubs and shoot stick and drink beer it is great.

Thanks Nate! Always good to hear from you honey.

Live indie rock bands at Next Door tonight, where it's 18+ all summer... also something at Pipeline... something at Thurtyninehotel... something at Indigo... etc. etc. ... sorry, I'm in a hurry :)

Don't You Just Love...

...TuesdayFridays?? So HOT. Burning up I am. Tonight is gonna be crazy. TELL me how fun added Fridays in the middle of the week are... Woo.

Tonight Kai Vodka is doing their thing at Pearl. The lychee flavor is so damn good you can actually drink it straight. Like, a real martini with only the vodka or whatever. Grown ups!!

Later on we're going to say hi to Cass at Du Vin [shhh, he doesn't know it yet] then scamper through Thirtyninehotel to wind down for two minutes with Newjass Quartet before checking out the Blue Geisha fashion show and whatever band is playing [ahem, update your page/site dudes] at Kaleidoscope. Fashion!

If I can find the time it's Waikiki man. Hopefully Lotus is open past 1am tonight cause it's on. HOT damn it's on.

Happy Friday/Tuesday.

OH WAIT! Special Announcement.... the Gym Class Heroes? They are actually pretty good. I checked out their CD because duh, we're gonna see them live here in a second and I'm a fan now. I highly recommend grabbing tickets to this.

Stuff to do for Tuesday...

...and that totally is going to include looking at my photo blog update from the weekend. It's only on the 'space for now but hey, whatever works right? The 'real' site should be updated soon.

As far as life in the night goes, I say be different sometimes. Sure it's a small town and you can probably tell that I'm particular about sticking to what's good... even if good means pretty much Chinatown. Anna Bananas was totally where I got started when I first moved here. [and NO you can't see those blogs!]. Tonight is always up in the air since it's open tables but sometimes it's actually ridiculously fun. Let me know how it goes:

Ryan and Justin are still keeping it going at Thirtyninehotel with the jazz thing. There is also jazzy stuff at Indigo with Maria Remos. If you're into mellow-cruise and you want the good options... go to Chinatown, man. Then you can complete the evening with the Kaleidescope. THAT is a damn good party... and check out the flier they did. It's a coloring contest! No shit! The winner gets a t-shirt or something so hit up the admin closet not for multi colored highlighters and I'll see you there.

OMG! Is it Already TUESDAY??

Yikes. Sorry people. I DID update my photo blog. You can look at that. Give me a minute or two to catch up on random things here though. I just started my new job today. Things will be slow for a second. Good slow though.

Tonight I'm going to say Happy Birthday to Trisha Lasago Goldberg then swoon over Pennylane then double-swoon over Ross Jackson. Eventsa Galore-a.

See you soon.

Car for Bike. Anyone?

So anyone who wants to trade... I have a 2000 hybrid honda with an expired safety check/registration and a 64x2 dual processor pc that I'll hand over for a BIKE and a MAC. Please e-mail me.

Tuesdays are special here. You already know this I think. At the risk of repeating myself every Tuesday about Thirtyninehotel and Next Door I'll touch on something different.... Honolulu Magazine's Photo Contest.

It's the 3rd one and the entries are getting more and more pro but YOU DO have a shot! The prize? Oh. Publication in their magazine and cash UP TO $500. Not the greatest incentive for pros but it would certainly look nice on a beginner's rez.

Full rules and info here.

If you're looking for Tuesday event info check dosomethingtonight they have it on lock for now. AND if you're looking for scoops on last night's bowling adventures check kalima. Mine will be around someday. *yawn*

Misfit Madness...

...wait. I meant to say Misfit MOVIE Madness. The two-day film fest that started yesterday. Check it out tonight at Arts at Marks Garage.

Also tonight: Hottie college co-eds at Compadres for Taco Tuesday, NewJass Quartet at Thirtyninehotel, Kaleidescope at Next Door, and some gangster cheap drink shit at Pipeline.

Enjoy!

WAIT! one more thing. Are you reading Genegabus's blog on the Star-bulletin website yet? Ahhh... you should.

Some of my favorites....

...have updated!

Shad had been lagging but he makes up for it with this vid for sure:

click to play

Amy was breaking my heart to pieces for not updating the past few months but linking to her old Prince 'zine was definitely enough apologies for this girl.

...and I'm starting to worry that Patrick might move to LA if he keeps having to fly there to do his show. Yikes. We'll see tho.

Last but not least, Hawaii's Internet a.k.a. Ryan Ozawa has done it again. "It" being revolutionizing the way people in Hawaii interact online. Check out his latest project inspired by my biggest crush Kan. If you have him on Twitter you can be notified immediately when he is streaming and where. If you are still anti-twitter you can still just check the site to see what's up. I have absolutely no problem with spending my boring desk-lunches watching him stream Ala Moana beach park, etc.:

TONIGHT: Don't forget lovely NewJass Quartet at Thirtyninehotel...

[remember when they first started doing this???]

Tuesday Stuff like Films and Fashion

So tonight the Honolulu International Film Festival Spring Showcase continues. I used to be a huge fan of Twin Peaks but am not so hot on the horror tip anymore. Sigh. According to Suren in LA:

Inland Empire is Lynch at his best - funny, thoughtful, eerie, beautiful, dark, deeply disturbing, and terrifying in a way that few horror films have ever affected me. The film is a slow burn, taking its time (about 3 hours), leaping through realities and bizarre encounters, continually keeping the audience asking themselves what reality they are experiencing, and what that reality means.

Sounds good. OH! Don't forget the Betsey Johnson fashion show event at Pearl tonight too. Makana is playing! You know how I feel about that.
'FASHION SHOW FOR THE EARTH'
Presented by Aveda Salon & Spa at Ala Moana with Betsey Johnson fashion show to benefit Hawaii Nature Center:
» Place: Pearl Ultralounge, Ala Moana Center Hookipa Terrace
» Time: 7 to 9 p.m. April 24
» Admission: $10 pre-sale at Aveda Salon & Spa; $15 at the door
» Call: 947-6141

LASTLY! The trendiest, funniest, hottest and friendliest night at Next Door by far:
