Monday . MONDAY. What the!

So I was just talking to Ah Foon. We are totally going to record the new promo spot like, today. If you listen to the Zone then you know it's already 3 weeks old. Ooooopsies! it's not like he doesn't have like millions of REAL spots to produce or anything, hahaha. Nah, just letting you know that we know. New one soon. It's only something we've been doing for like 3 weeks so. Give it time. Just so you know, Stella sponsors those. Hence that logo thing popping up around here. I had it up in the MAIN AREA spaces where you look but actually like it better off to the side. Mentioned, just not ALL UP IN YOUR FACE. Do you care? Would you like to voice your opinion? Well! It IS Monday Poll day. Go ahead. Voice away. Just know that I'm probably going to leave it the way it is. You should know by now that when it comes to Honolulu's Nightlife Diaries.... I do whatever the hell I want. So there.

Speaking of. HEY! I got a longer update for those of you that .... um, like those. Just for you. Sorry if it's not up to nighttime activities par. I did more day stuff. It was a long week. WORK people. New jobs sometimes get preference. New jobs I LOVE also get a bit more exposure. Radio rules tho. Serious!
I DID make it out to ONE party. Guess where!

You'll never guess. !!

Wake up... WAKE UP it's Saturday

Well you don't have to. I almost didn't. After becoming a monk last night I'm pretty much ready for anything though. What a film. Did you go to Art After Dark? I was totally there, but got distracted.
Distracted in to AMAZINGNESS. Serious.

This film was dope. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone suffering from inability to pay attention to stillness for too long. Into Great Silence.

Oh I did mean it when I said wake up. You can! Don't even get out of bed though just lean over and turn on the clock radio and put it on 94.7 for a change. Ahh. We'll be doing the Breakfast Club live from Brew Moon from 10am - 11:30pm this morning ah.

Tonight is a whole different story.

Pay Attnetion! A VERY Cool Person...

...is in town RIGHT NOW! He's also going to sign some of his books at A'Ala Park Boardshop today at 5pm. If you haven't heard of Chris Nieratko or thought about picking up his book Skinema don't EVEN worry. Like what, you're expected to know about each and every cool and x-rated thing in the whole WORLD? Pshhhh. Ya right. Just believe me ok? I only know about him because I subscribe to Vice but whatever man. I'll be the first to tell you that I haven't bought the book but it's only because if I want a compilation of his columns I can get to clippin. It will be super rad to meet him tho and have a conversation. Peep his site and you'll fall in love too. OH! and here's a review ripped directly off from Amazon about the book... just so you know it's not "technially" porn people:

SKINEMA reviews over 150 pornos but seldom mentions porn. The book is actually about the pill-popping exploits of Chris Nieratko. "He's an asshole," as Johnny Knoxville puts it, but whether he's rescuing a stalker from choking on her own vomit, getting his nose broken for having AIDS (he doesn't), or marrying the one woman that can put up with his insanity, his life sounds so much like a collection of hilarious bar stories it's impossible not to grab a beer and listen to the whole thing. Ten years ago, Chris Nieratko was getting drunk with pals from the seminal skateboard magazine Big Brother and writing whatever came to his wasted head. When he became the editor they started a now-infamous group of idiots called Jackass. Chris ate eggs until he puked for the show but his love of pills and sleeping lent itself more to the literary world. When Vice Magazine and a few other outlets said they needed porn reviews, Chris obliged by sticking the names of porn videos above various rants about his life. The review for LIQUID GOLD 2 begins, "My mom could single-handedly save my town from flooding if ever the occasion arose. She once worked at the United States' largest producer of maxi-pads and before being laid off, stockpiled truckloads of the stuff." He mentions the porn he is reviewing approximately zero times. The pieces hardly ever address the videos, instead using them as a catalyst for ranting and reminiscing about his own life, the pieces ultimately forming a kind of anarchic memoir of sex, drugs, failed romantic encounters with pornstars, fake tits, bad decisions, mean-spirited antics, and the ultimate showstopper, marriage. The book also includes the definitive guide to getting a stripper to leave the club with you. SKINEMA is the first in a series of VICE books inspired by the magazine's content. It's called Jackass Journalism in remembrance of the once great gonzo journalism that so tragically shot itself in the head recently.

You can de-maladjust after at the Honolulu Academy of Arts for another Art After Dark if you like. This one is KABUKI and will have a Giinko Marischino performance. Act like you know!

Supercrew will be re-maladjusting later later at the Thunder from Down Under. Because a steamy misappropriate soft core porn weekend is how WE roll....

Oooopsies!!

Woah I just noticed it's already almost 2pm and no daily update from me. I spent all morning at the HAB training sesh (yes, it was amazing thanks!) and all of my lunch lurking Amy kellner's summer of okayness. Oopsies!

Well! It's not like there isn't anything of note tonight. You already know the deal right. RIGHT? Thursday. THURSDAY! It's totally Thursday. That's the day before Friday. Check with the green hornets at DoSomethingTonight for a list of every possible thing if you're looking for do-able options. I think I'm gonna get cozy with Netflix before the weekend. It's been too long. My poor poor poor stale queue. It hasn't moved since last month. I actually had to downgrade my membership from the 4 per month (i.e. LOSER!) to the 2 per month (i.e. a little bit of a life). Rad.

WAIT! one more thing! Thanks for introducing yourself to me a Valerie Joseph, Shelly. It's rad that you read me even tho we hadn't met before. That means the world to me. To the other people that do that too-- never stop! It matters.

Just when you think...

...your Monday is gonna suck and you're all tired and feeling guilty for sleeping more than going out over the weekend and your day was long and it's not going to be over anytime soon and you're stuck in traffic trying to keep an appointment and the guy in front of you won't get out of the right turn only lane then BAAAAAAAAAAAAM! AMAZINGLY EPIC MONDAY NIGHT just comes out of nowhere.

I'm talking about last night. WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT THE!!!!!!!?!
I love you, life. Thank you so much for... um, existing?

EPIC meal with Marilyn and Echo at Benihana's much?!

Not expecting to see The Shins then seeing them anyway much??

Knowing who Ratatat is, liking their stuff, having BAMP work their ass off to get us a show to see them, then getting BLOWN AWAY by their live show with the rest of the coolest people on Oahu much?

Um ya. WHAT THE!!! the blog is done people. EPIC Monday. Thanks for that.

Monday, July 23, 2007

Oh don't think...

....I didn't notice THIS!

[ps: pictures from the cut n sewn anniversary party are up on dan's flickr... it was fun! i took like 3 pics so yay, he's got his uploaded... enjoy]

Monday UN fun day? HA!

Mondays are tough, I'll be the first to admit it. Thank GOD for BAMP! They've been managing to bring Hawaii some very good talent since forming a few years ago and man, I gotta tell you. Success! Seriously. I'm trying to remember their first big show-- and I think it was Nick Cannon and 112 in 2005. Anyone? Or was it Mix Master Mike? Shoot, I wish I could remember, but ya, now they've got the venues overflowing and are identifying bands that other concert promoters are like "who?" and the concert goers are like "YES!!" and... well, it's working people. Case in point? Ummm... TONIGHT! Jeez, RATATAT?!?!? What the! I'm so excited. Thankyouthankyouthankyou. Monday is definitely going to be a fun day Brad, Aubrey, Matty and Philip!

Also, before RATATAT, Uncle Tom is presenting The Shins for the kids. They're very nice to listen to. Come early if that's your thing.

[OH ps: I already updated all my longer photo updates. Check em out if you want. XOXO]

I miss Manila.....

...and I'm not even counting lurking MM Yu by the dim of my cell phone while surrounded by tragically hip clubbers at Thirtyninehotel. This is a pretty epic show you guys. And it's RIGHT THERE where we've been mingling for the past three weeks. Well. I've been trying! It's already almost time for another first Friday so I am making it a goal this week to get up there for a pau hana fresh juice cocktail and a lurk of the stuff.
David Goldberg has a piece running today that has gotten me even more excited to see it in the natural light.
MANILA ENVELOPE curated by Jennifer Wofford [who uses UBER! i love that site] will be at thirtyninehotel til August 25th. Get there.

WHO made it there last night by the way? I had a Christa emergency and missed everything but my bed last night. Let me know how it went. Christine is amazing.

Happy Birthday Cut n Sewn...

...or is it actually your birthday Dan? I'm so confused! Well, I'm sure I'll figure it out at some point. Celebrate!

Ctrl Alt Del is playing! Those guys are so good. This should be a pretty fun event.

My brother Chris is back on island to help classy Lauren celebrate her birthday up at Sunset beach. They've been celebrating all week and, judging from Chris's voicemails, they are having a blast. Boo. I'll do everything I can to get up there you guys!

Saturday will be a bit much. Russell Tanoue's "real" birthday celebration is happening. Skyline is going to feature BELLY DANCERS! There's also something going on far away somewhere. Eh.

Twighlight Summer Concert....

...has such a nice ring to it, no? How about a nice harp ensemble? A blanket, a loaf of bread and some cheese and some of the world's most amazing tropical botanicals. The cannonball tree is there. WHAT THE! Seriously one of the most stunning things I've ever seen in real life... but I'll let you in on a little secret: I'm really in to trees. So majestic they are! And lovely...

So anyway! A free concert in a lovely setting. Why not? Tonight's show is pipes and drums. DRUMS! Woo. I remember trying out for a pipe and drum thing. It was so cool, man. You get to totally twirl your sticks all crazy before you hit the drum each time. It was definitely a cool technique but I'm glad the sticks were attached to my wrists with a leather strap, haha.

So anyway, Thursday activity..... Foster's Botanical Garden! Right in the heart of near-downtown. A fabulous setting... with the concert at 5:30pm. Nice pau hana. Dare to be different!
...and you can go see this plant. Part of the Pea Family. *snicker*

ALSO LATER: Another budget-friendly option is Swampa ZZ at Indigo. It's free cover and some amazingly refreshing funk music.

Celebrity Status....

...well not really. I really just wanted to mention that the SPICE GIRLS are getting back together!!!! Can you believe it! Zig a zig ah! More on that, um, someday.

What else.... we drove by the place that had my van parked outside today. I guess I'll go ahead and tell the entire heartbreaking story. See... it involved something super. A super beetle. A 1971 super beetle. A 1971 SEA FOAM GREEN super beetle. I loved that car.

So ya... it was the best car in the whole world and I loved it to pieces for ever and ever until the day it didn't go. That's always the worst isn't it? Damn. GO car. ugh... So the guy that was nice enough to tow it for me and attempt a repair told me while avoiding my tear soaked eyes that it was going to need a new engine... but that's when I looked up and saw the larger, newer, more practical vehicle there pretty much smiling down at me. It's not the first VW Camper I had driven, and I really missed the upright stance you have when you're driving a bus with the wheel horizontal in your lap. It's so fun! I begged him to let me buy it. Which he did... at a reduced rate since I gave him my beloved super beetle to restore for his daughter. AW!

I immediately went to work letting my girl scout troop loose on it having "Craft Day" on the interior and turning it into a driving wonderland of fun and amazement. If you know anything about these vehicles, you know they are fully equipped to house 4 people comfortably in one of two convertible beds. There is also the card table fold-out option that works well at Sandy Beach for playing cards inside when it gets too hot [big John knows!], and the back couch was the perfect size for Hankie to watch the water or nap on. See below.

You can imagine why/how it was slightly upsetting seeing my car that I traded away for a computer, a PC even, because I had evil hybrid in the picture giving me all this false hope for my car future. Now, two days after evil hybrid has finally kicked the bucket for good I see the van that I loved so much just sitting there on Queen street with a fresh coat of paint.

Hold on to what you can people, and definitely let some things go.... but DAMN it make sure you know which is which!

ALSO: Happy Birthday Ara! Everyone is going to be in Chinatown tonight. GO! Acid Wash people!!

So, Hawaii. Are you getting ready...

...for the HURRICANE?!?! Man I need a tv. Scrolling around the Starbulletin this morning and I see this:

Ya ya ya, we're all pretty certain it will take the same path more previous storms have taken and dissipate into a heavenly breeze by the time it reaches us.
Then again... nobody thought we were going to have that EARTHQUAKE last year either. Or did someone? I dunno... didn't have tv then either. DOH!

On another note, I have been getting a nice steady stream of feedback from some friends and people I've yet to meet but one in particular was pretty frickin funny, so I thought I'd incorporate a poll with it. Please don't be offended by this message and remember, for every note you DO see, there's about 30 that you never will, ok?

Ummmmm.... not sure how 'hot' the debate would be but sure, reader... I'd love to have the poll. So here you go. VOTE!

PS: the latest photo update is done.

Dreary Weekend....

....on Oahu. Noticed a lot of people didn't do much. Myself included. DID manage a quick current-blockbuster-preview-sesh on Saturday. Here's the rundown:

Film: 1408
Time Spent Watching: about an hour
Verdict: VERY good. Filmed super nice, excellent script [I believe it's based on a Stephen King story?] and very good in terms of visuals and cast. We only left because it got too scary for me. I'm a wimp.

Film: Die Harder
Time Spent Watching: :15
Verdict: OK. I only left because we were watching from the front row and my neck started to hurt. It was at the part where the kid was like "I'm coming with you" so yes, very cliche, but funny, and Bruce Willis still looks damn good.

Film: Harry Potter
Time Spent Watching: :40
Verdict: Caught this AND the trailers. WHAT is with the blockbusters these days? They all looked not just lame but super lame. I feel for the masses. The previews were also not aligned with the audience, as they showed that Lindsay Lohan where she's insane and a stripper preview to 6 year olds. Nice job. Anyway, watched this one from the beginning to about :40 in... it was ok. I'm assuming it's very similar to the previous films. It was ok I guess. It's not my thing unfortunately. So we broke out. If you liked the other ones you'll probably like this one. That Hogwart school looks so fun tho. Serious. I wish they really had those.

Film: Transformers
Time Spent Watching: :05
Verdict: It's not a cartoon.... and it was awful. Caught it towards the end where the car monster was fighting/racing in what looked like the east LA river. Good for younger men I would imagine but it was NOT what I thought it would be. Bad bad bad.

Anyway, I have a weekly update for you as well. I just have to.... um... do it. Give me a minute. After work most likely. We'll see. Now that I 'officially' have a car that won't go it cuts down my fiddle-farting around town time.

Since you probably got used to seeing the highlights before the actual full-blogs I'll go ahead and start that. New tradition! *Sigh* it's nice to be able to do whatever I want.

Starting with last Tuesday. Der introduced supercrew to a new spot! It was hard to find at first.

Indie Rock Tuesdays... Ara has new hair!

If you're the one enjoying this gift bag, just know that it was mine. Thanks to Amy and Lia Sophia for giving it to me then getting me too martini'd to remember it, lol

Wine tasting at Du Vin with a taster that knows.

And finally-- don't think the rain stopped Art Spree from being the best Saturday ever.

Soon! Tonight even..... maybe :)

Public Enemy....

...was totally here a few years ago. Remember that? You might have missed it. Even though there was a ridiculously loyal fan base that turned out for this, I think the show was an overall miss but ONLY as far as profit goes. Ask Dave Hisaka, some people can stand to lose 50K here or there...but for the people that WERE at this show and WERE fans of Public Enemy it was an outstanding afternoon. Amazing even. I'll even stretch that and say it was the best show in terms of hip hop I've seen out here. Davie says it's the best show he's ever seen and he doesn't even LIKE hip hop.

The venue was perfect-- outdoors, plenty of room, bathrooms, choke parking. No bottleneck situations as far as entering or leaving. The vibe and energy of the crowd was top notch. Just a great well thought out plan. The only thing missing? PEOPLE. I seriously respect everyone in concert industry on Oahu. You never know what people will show up for. It's a gamble probably pretty much every time.

What got me on that? Oh, Jason's column mentioning Wu Tang's full lineup heading out here with Supernatural and Bone Thugs September 1st at the Blaisdell. Do they have enough Hawaii fans to fill that place? Will they actually buy tickets and show up? And WTF Living Legends?!?! WHY aren't you coming as well, you are part of the Rock the Bells but you can't make another trip to your 'second home' again? What's up. We love you... we THOUGHT you loved us. So anyway, ya there's no question that this will sell out. Right? RIGHT?

We'll see... I know I'm buying my ticket as soon as they go on sale just in case. You never know!

Giinko Marischino
Tassho Pearce
G-Spot
DJ Skid
Redeye Jedi (b-boys)
E.T. - SoulShifters, Circle of Fire

Not to mention the circa '97 slideshow at 8pm. How amazing that these folks are going to take us back to that time with them. It's a journey I know I'll be taking for the first time, as I didn't 'necessarily' find my home here until like 6 years after that. This is going to be one special night people. See you there.
