HELLO Friday!

Anything of note tonight? A few f-f-f-fabulous f-f-food f-f-friday options that I know of are the openings of both Cassis [Harbor Court] and another Roy's [Waikiki Beachwalk].

There's also a new party happening at Thirtyninehotel for the indie/dance crowd. It's supposed to be pretty fun, I chatted with one of the promoters about it last night. New parties are fun!:

PS: Last night was crazy. Like a dream or something. The show was VERY good though. I had nightmares for the 2 hours I laid down though so please excuse me for now. Tired.

Learning! I learned a few things.

SO!
i'm totally excited in geek-land right now because i just figured out how to search just one site on Google. it was to find this picture:

i was looking for mako on my website so i put "mako site:supercw.com" in the search window and it pulled up everything from my site that has that. i'm SURE someone out there was wondering how to do that.

Last night was pretty ridiculous, by the way. If "ridiculous" means "BEST time ever". The pics are slowly making their way to the world of cyberspace so i'll let you know when. Actually, it appears that Chris's take is way better than what i can whip up so enjoy that for now.

Tonight is the last night of the Honolulu International Film festival AND the Zion i/The Grouch show at ND. I might go.

Something SUUUUPER Rad I came across at work today

The first year of Thrasher magazine.

[might take a second to load]
This was uploaded to the new YouTube for documents called "Scribd". It's about to blow up. Get in there.

SO what. Wanna start a software or Internet company?

Fear Not! Now there's not one, not two, but THREE venture capital firms that are offering the opportunity to people that might otherwise be clueless.
It started with YCombinator but has now been expanded [copied?] to TechStars and even YEurope. Early stage specialists with the idea that providing more support (housing, consultants, pocket cash, introductions to investors) than liquid might actually be the way to get a company on its feet. Think about your idea. Then think some more. Then apply. That's right... apply. There's no business plan slash pitch meeting it's straight question and answer... If you have a great product or idea the passion will be there and you could very well be on your way to one of three "startup camps" to get to work.

MY idea? Oh, I totally want to produce a documentary and follow a company through the entire process. You already know I have an affection for Justin.tv who is funded by YCombinator, but check out some of their other young ducklings that are being nursed to health in SF, Colorado and Vienna. I bet you can do it too.

Saturday and Sunday recap with the stars

Tuesday Stuff like Films and Fashion

So tonight the Honolulu International Film Festival Spring Showcase continues. I used to be a huge fan of Twin Peaks but am not so hot on the horror tip anymore. Sigh. According to Suren in LA:

Inland Empire is Lynch at his best - funny, thoughtful, eerie, beautiful, dark, deeply disturbing, and terrifying in a way that few horror films have ever affected me. The film is a slow burn, taking its time (about 3 hours), leaping through realities and bizarre encounters, continually keeping the audience asking themselves what reality they are experiencing, and what that reality means.

Sounds good. OH! Don't forget the Betsey Johnson fashion show event at Pearl tonight too. Makana is playing! You know how I feel about that.
'FASHION SHOW FOR THE EARTH'
Presented by Aveda Salon & Spa at Ala Moana with Betsey Johnson fashion show to benefit Hawaii Nature Center:
» Place: Pearl Ultralounge, Ala Moana Center Hookipa Terrace
» Time: 7 to 9 p.m. April 24
» Admission: $10 pre-sale at Aveda Salon & Spa; $15 at the door
» Call: 947-6141

Honolulu Film Fest according to, um, me.

Saw Cats Of Mirikitani today. What made me enjoy this film so much was Jimmy Mirikitani himself. His stories, his observations. His personality. His TALENT. Linda, the director who films this piece for over a year of following Jimmy around New York city and some other places, was a bit too doting for my taste. The dude doesn't need help. He needs to express himself. If she eased up only slightly and let the story unfold on its own (and she does for the most part-- brilliant work) then it would get a perfect 10 in my book.

Outfuckingstanding for the first day. I'm gonna check out David Lynch's stuff on Tuesday.

Nice afternoon too today, btw. Sooo windy. Since I insisted of parking on the roof of the parking garage at Dole today guess what time it was. Guess!
KITE time. :)

Matt Costa tonight. I can't tell you how excited I am for this performance. I know he was just here but it really feels like you can never get enough of his show. Like Makana. Except... how much luckier could I get that Makana lives HERE. Oh, I don't know.... how about having him and Matt Costa playing together. Tonight. !!!

Back to "that place"

"Artherton" is going back there. I was too. Maybe we all can. OOOH! Maybe we can share.

Moving on. HEY! Some ideas for you this weekend:
FRIDAY
5pm Urban pacific at Next Door (I already mentioned this)
9pm SMART Magazine's 2-year milestone fabulousfashionistadarlings event at the W
11pm Dan Weaver's "Cut n Sewn" fashion show and the Malcognitas at Thirtyninehotel
2am LOTUS Soundbar for tourists-meet-locals-and-vice-versa fun

SATURDAY
Hiff Spring Showcase at Dole
Kokua Festival at the Shell
Matt Costa at Next Door for Kokua after party
Skyline at the Hanohano room

SUNDAY
UH Fashion show/lunch at the Sheraton Waikiki
Tea at Halekulani with YSL and Tiffany's
Hiff Spring Film Festival again!
Kokua Festival again!

There. That's enough stuff to keep me distracted.

*sigh*

ps: in case you didn't know, the event is crazy fabulous. I have shots from last time here.

Fifteen Years. FIFTEEN Years. Congratulations Stereo.

if you're in San Francisco I would advise you to stop by and congratulate the guys. Milestone for sure. Wish I could be there.

My Mos Def Moment

Friday.
What a great night. I almost didn't go to Mos Def because Zana backed out at the last minute and I was scrambling for company. Then I remembered how much better it is to cruise solo and just went down. The VIP was suuuuper empty but I saw KC's boy Coop cruising and some others. I made friends.
So here comes the opening act. COOP! and his boys. They tore shit up, can someone tell me their name please. I'll love you forever.

Anyway, here comes Mos Def. As in, coming straight for me while I'm standing by the bar upstairs. I HATE photographing celebrities, man. It makes me feel icky and not fabulous. I couldn't help it though. Unfortunately, the flash went off as he was done smiling at me and continued making his way to the stage. When I looked at my display I realized I was zoomed all the way in anyway. GAH!
The photo actually turned out kind of cute.

The rest of the shots from this night are here.

Today we are celebrating girl power

...I am in big trouble. I am supposed to be working today. It's only Tuesday, for Christ's sake. I have interviews to set up. People to find. Companies to talk to. Yet here I am... hanging on every action being emmitted from Justine on Justin.tv today.
YIKES!

Justine to the cable car guy: "I'm videotaping you live for the internet. You are famous now. Hey! Can I have your autograph?"

I LOVE her.

ps: Kaladiscope tonight at Next Door!

Hey, Outer Islands! Yooo-hooo! Here we come!

I'm wondering how the residents of Maui and Kauai are feeling right now about the Superferry.

It's coming. ...and so am I. The idea of finally being able to travel state-wide with my car is being heavily overshadowed by my amazement that it's taken this long for Hawaii to adopt an inter-island transportation system. Then again, I'm from the Puget Sound.

After craaaaazy Friday...

...it's time for classy Saturday. After nice wine and nice dinner with nice ladies at Du Vin tonight we are checking out the Showdown in Chinatown. I HOPE you know what Showdown is... basically, participants are given the topic and two mandatory props to be used 24 hours in advance by text message. They then have until 8pm Saturday night to create a short film based on said topic and props. Tonight the topic is "addiction" and the 2 props are an apple and pencil.

I'm looking forward to it.

Honolulu "It" Girl's Grandpa in the Hot Seat....

SO Senator Akaka will be participating in a live blog chat today from noon - 1pm.

[Honolulu Advertiser]

He'll be answering your questions and concerns as Hawaii state residents as it pertains to the US government. I really want to ask him how he goes about life knowing that he has THE most fabulous granddaughter on the planet. But whatever.

What's hotter than getting blogged about?

Oh I dunno..... maybe going out with a guy that is broadcasting his life 24/7 on the internet. Hey, I had a bad breakup. What else am I going to do.
Justin.tv is s.h.r.n. so I'm going to SF for a date. Any suggestions for gifts, things to do, talk about, etc. are welcome. Hurry up now. I only have a few weeks.

It goes down Saturday May 5th (tentatively, but pretty much for sure) so make sure you save that day to be glued to your computer. We're a few hours behind SF so you won't have to stay up late. Or maybe you will. It's a mystery!
">

PS: Genegabus at the Star-bulletin did a cute shout-out about it. Thank GOD he had a nice looking shot of me.

[gotta love flash]

Colin's Kicks...

...sent me a text message at 3:42am about two weeks ago.

I miss you Christa. I remember when you first gave me your card at the Wave. I'm growing sunflowers. Want one?

I eagerly responded yes, not sure if it was innuendo or not-- and not even really caring either way. Colin is superfly.

Got this photo-message just now. I am seriously down with this kid people:

Tonight we are celebrating...

...hipsters. Namely, the Malcognitas. Who are playing at Next Door tonight. Come see.

ALSO! I went to the first of its kind Hawaii Fashion Incubator last night. It was at Arts at Marks and had an impressive turnout. The panel had Paula Rath, Lacy Matsumoto, and some other local fashion experts talking about stuff. Keep updated on what they are doing because I truly believe that Honolulu's soon-to-be-organized Fashion Week WILL happen very soon.

Make sure you save the date for Urban Pacific, April 20th. More info soon.

Flash in the Honolulu Advertiser today....

Hats off to classic style

By Paula Rath
Advertiser Staff Writer

Flash Hansen shows off his hat collection in his Makiki apartment.

Photos by DEBORAH BOOKER | The Honolulu Advertiser

Flash, as Flash Hansen is known to everyone around town, is an event promoter. He and partner Matty Boy Hazelgrove create events that involve music, dance, imbibing and fashion. Whether in the Hanohano Room or the W, Flash & Matty Boy Presents attract the Islands' most savvy young fashionistas. And they always have a dress code.

So what does Flash wear when he's just being himself? We visited him in his apartment, which he shares with his dogs, Chewy and Nui.

FLASH HANSEN

Age: 32

Neighborhood: Makiki

What’s your personal style?
I’m not cutting-edge by any means and naturally lean toward a more classic, practical look (for someone my age).

Your favorite piece of clothing?
For upscale, probably my nice suits. I wish I could afford more of them! For day I have a pair of blue camo shorts that I could wear every day.

What would we never see you wear?
Sandals of any kind, and anything baggy.

Who is your personal style icon?
I don’t have an icon, but l like the classic old movie-star looks of the ’40s to ’60s.'

What are you willing to pay more for?
“Anything unique, anything! A well-cut and designed suit or the shirt with the perfect cut.”

Your best bargain find?
There have been many, all at Savers, Goodwill, Salvation Army or the military surplus store. A $2 shirt that fits like a $200 shirt is always a treasure. Once I found a sick tie at Wal-Mart for $9. It looks just like a $100 tie. That’s like hitting the jackpot.

What can you never get enough of?
This is a fashion question, right? Well, um, shoes, hats, ties, sunglasses and clean, new, comfy socks.

Where do you shop?
“Depends on how much money I have, ha ha. I used to LOVE the old DKNY. But since they moved they dropped their men’s line. Unbelievable! Their shirt cut fit me the best. Nowadays, Diesel, Armani Exchange, Second Skin and Adasa are great. Shopping on the Mainland is always the best, though. I get so much cool stuff that they don’t even sell in Hawai'i: Ezekiel, WESC, Jedidiah (my new favorite T-shirts), to name a few.

Who cuts your hair?
Renee at Sanctuary Salon, for the last 15 years!

Best thing about being an event producer?
Having an idea or concept, creating and producing it, and seeing everyone stoked on it after all your hard work.

The worst thing about it?
Everybody thinks they are your best friend and want to take advantage of that.

What’s a little-known fact about you?
I was born and raised here. That usually catches people off guard.
